Operating Room Troubles
Some surgeons got caught up in the theatrics of performing in front of an audience and cared more about dazzling them with difficult techniques than what was actually beneficial for the patient. In some cases spectators would be called down to participate without proper disinfection or without proper education.
Despite the horrible problems with infection and disease spectators were allowed into the theatre without washing themselves. Also sick spectators were allowed in the theatres and bacteria and viruses could spread from host to the patient being operated on.
The theatrical environment would have been very distracting. Even if surgeons were not interested in the crowd around them whispers and distant movement could cause the surgeon to lose focus. Without concentration surgeries were much more dangerous.
